Research Project: Root-Zone Soil Moisture Using P-band Observations

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-045-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2019
End Date: Mar 31, 2024

Objective:
To determine the performance and accuracy of a P-band microwave radiometer over agricultural fields.

Approach:
NASA will develop a P-band radiometer that will be installed in the fields at USDA ARS in Beltsville, Maryland. NASA will also deploy the ComRAD L-band truck based radiometer system at the same site. NASA will operate both the P-band and L-band systems. USDA will help in the deployment on the systems and provide logistical support. USDA will deploy ground sensors to provide in situ validation for the root-zone algorithms. USDA will also make field measurements of soil moisture and vegetation for the duration of the field experiment.
