Research Project: Survival of the Animal Pathogen Bordetella bronchiseptica in Aerosols

Location: Virus and Prion Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-237-013-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 15, 2019
End Date: Jan 14, 2024

Objective:
The goal of this collaboration is to examine the survival of the animal pathogen Bordetella bronchiseptica in aerosols and to identify bacterial genes and responses that contribute to survival.

Approach:
1) Determine the optimal time for evaluation of aerosol stress for B. bronchiseptica; 2) Determine transcriptional response during aerosolization for B. bronchiseptica (RNASeq); 3) Identify B. bronchiseptica genes required for persistence in aerosols; and 4) Determine if specific gene products (identified in studies two and three) are necessary or aid in survival during nebulization or aerosolization stress for B. bronchiseptica.
