Research Project: Evaluation of the Turfgrass Potential of Warm-Season grasses in the Northern Mojave Desert

Location: Forage and Range Research

Project Number: 2080-21000-018-024-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2018
End Date: Sep 30, 2023

Objective:
Characterize the performance of lines of bermudagrass, zoysia grass, and saltgrass for turfgrass performance under limited irrigation and green color retention during late fall winter.

Approach:
We will transplant clones of bermudagrass, zoysia grass, and saltgrass populations to a Washington County, Utah, field site in spring 2019. We will then maintain the plants under limtied (60% evapotranspiration replacement) irrigation while characterizing their turfgrass potential and measuring their maintenance of green color during cold temperatures in late fall and winter. Evaluations will occur over the course of three to four growing seasons. The best populations will be identified, selected, and hybridized for additional evaluation.
