Research Project: Agricultural Remote Sensing using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-041-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2018
End Date: Aug 31, 2023

Objective:
Work with UMass-Amherst (UMA) to evaluate the quality and accuracy of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing to understand soil moisture and agricultural productivity. Analysis will be conducted on remote sensing data and experimentation on Long Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) Sites, including Little River Georgia and the California LTAR networks. Analysis of the resulting datasets will lead to the development of SAR based land surface products.

Approach:
The cooperative work proposed here will support the hosting of a post-doctoral student and undergraduate students for remote sensing analysis and physical sampling assistance as part of large scale field experiments. ARS will assist in the analysis of the remote sensing data and lead the field experimentation portion of the investigation. GMU will be provided resources for the post-doctoral research and students involved in the study and guide the analysis and implementation of the study.
