Research Project: Breeding Corn for Favorable Agronomic Characteristics and Enhanced Resistance to Aflatoxin Accumulation

Location: Corn Host Plant Resistance Research

Project Number: 6064-21000-015-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2018
End Date: Jul 30, 2020

Objective:
Cooperator will (1) identify corn germplasm with resistance to Aspergillus flavus infection and aflatoxin accumulation, and (2) develop breeding populations with favorable agronomic qualities and enhanced resistance to aflaatoxin accumulation. Germplasm lines derived from the breeding populations will be used in producing corn hybrids with resistance to aflatoxin contamination.

Approach:
Germplasm lines from various sources including the International Maze and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) will be screened for resistance. Populations developed using multiple sources of resistance will be evaluated using different techniques at multiple locations. The populations will be subjected to several cycles of recurrent selection for improved agronomic quality and enhanced resistance.
