Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This presentation will discuss the industrial applications of starch based materials including starch grafted poly(methyl acrylate) as loose fill packaging foam, starch blended with polyvinyl alcohol for film application, and starch crosslinked with synthetical polymers in adhesive applications. Starch based materials provide low cost, environmentally friendly, and annually renewable advantages. The barrier for industrial applications are in their processing difficulty, moisture sensitivity, and durability. The process for each application will be described and the biodegradation data will be illustrated. The future potential applications in fiberglass industries as sizing, binder, and a surface treatment agent will be briefly discussed without revealing detailed proprietary information.
