Research Project: Documenting Scientific and Indigenous Histories of Plant Ecology

Location: Range Sheep Production Efficiency Research

Project Number: 2056-21500-001-012-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2026
End Date: Jun 30, 2028

Objective:
The objective of this agreement is to allow the Cooperator to initiate an exploratory anthropological study of scientific and indigenous plant ecology histories in the Intermountain West including research questions: 1) how do researchers investigate and manage relations between plants, animals, and people in complex rangeland systems; 2) how do land-based communities manage rangeland and ecological relationships.

Approach:
The approach will include both ethnographic and historical methods. The Cooperator will conduct participant observation and collect extensive field notes to record the cultures and processes involved in rangeland science, including observing how scientists monitor plants, and how they study relationships between plants, animals, and people in complex rangeland systems. The Cooperator will also observe and describe the way land-based communities manage rangeland and ecological relationships.
