Research Project: Field Release and Early Evaluation of Fungal Biocontrol Agents for the Management of Multiple Invasive Weeds in Idaho and Adjacent States

Location: Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research

Project Number: 8044-30400-001-025-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 10, 2026
End Date: Aug 9, 2027

Objective:
The objectives are to (1) release Ramularia crupinae at established field sites in Idaho and Oregon, (2) assess impact of Ramularia crupinae in the field, (3) assess impact of Ramularia crupinae in a common garden, (4) perform systematic collections of Puccinia chondrillina, (5) survey the distribution and impact of P. chondrillina on Chondrilla juncea populations, and (6) release Puccinia jaceae at established yellow start-thistle sites in Idaho.

Approach:
(1) Release and monitor Ramularia crupinae at common crupina field populations located in Idaho and Oregon using previously developed protocols, (2) assess Ramularia crupinae impact on diverse common crupina genotypes under different environmental parameters, (3) perform an extensive survey of western U.S. Chondrillina juncea populations critical for documenting weed densities, P. chondrillina disease incidence, and fungal collections, and (4) release and monitor P. jaceae at yellow star-thistle field sites in Idaho using established protocols.
