Research Project: Agronomic research and breeding of hairy vetch to increase seed yield.

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21500-001-024-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2026
End Date: Mar 31, 2028

Objective:
The objectives of this research are to: 1) determine the seed yield of advance lines of hairy vetch; 2) determine flower abortion rates per inflorescence and investigate how agronomic practices affect reproductive allocation and seed yield formation and 3) investigate agronomic practices that may improve seed yield such as seeding rate, growth regulators, and pod sticker.

Approach:
Replicated field experiments will be conducted at the OSU hyslop field laboratory or commercial fields using experimental advanced lines and commercial cultivars of hairy vetch. Plants will be evaluated for flower abortion through the field season. Plots will be harvested and evaluated for seed yield, seed number, seed size, biomass and harvest index.
