Research Project: Enhancing Water Resource Sustainability and Long-Term Agricultural Productivity with Improved Modeling of Soil Loss and Accumulated Soil Nutrients

Location: Grassland Soil and Water Research Laboratory

Project Number: 3098-13610-009-004-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2026
End Date: Apr 30, 2029

Objective:
The Cooperator will enhance the Soil and Water Assessment Tool Plus (SWAT+) by leveraging findings from previously funded research on legacy nutrient processes to improve representation of long-term nutrient accumulation, nutrient cycling, and soil loss processes in agricultural landscapes in support of USDA’s Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP), water resource sustainability, conservation assessment, and sustained agricultural productivity.

Approach:
The Cooperator will apply existing scientific knowledge, available datasets, and findings from previously funded research on legacy nutrient processes to improve the Soil and Water Assessment Tool Plus (SWAT+) for use in the Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP). Work will include reviewing current model structures, prior research findings, and candidate algorithms relevant to nutrient behavior in agricultural soils, soil loss and associated nutrient movement, and nutrient storage and release within watershed systems.
