Research Project: Advanced and single hil testing of hop germplasm

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-061-022-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2025
End Date: May 31, 2026

Objective:
Develop new hop germplasm with resistance to powdery and downy mildew adapted to the Pacific Northwest.

Approach:
Based upon the approach outlined in objective 1 of the CRIS project 2072-21000-051-00D, experimental germplasm will be provided to the Oregon Hop Commission for distribution to commercial hop growers. The lines will be planted in large scale blocks and managed under commercial conditions. Lines will be evaluated for the following traits: 1) Yield/vigor, 2) Susceptibility to powdery mildew, aphids and spider mites when they occur, 3) Bittering acid composition, 4) Storage-ability, 5) Essential oil composition. Experimental lines will be harvested and used for pilot brewing. Germplasm will be provided for single-hill field trailing for sex, powdery and downy mildew resistance/tolerance and vigor. Data will be used for selection of clones for advancement into field experiments.
