Research Project: Improving Plant Biosecurity Through Genomic Approaches for Emerging Plant Pathogens

Location: Horticultural Crops Disease and Pest Management Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-22000-045-056-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2025
End Date: Aug 31, 2027

Objective:
Characterization of plant pathogen diversity and communities in nursery and horticultural production systems.

Approach:
This project will identify genetic diversity of Phytophthora pathogens including P. ramorum and other important Phytophthora species. Briefly, we will use population genomic approaches to profile genetic diversity in populations of select Phytophthora species. Variation among isolates within species will be assessed using genotyping methods including whole genome sequencing as well as plant pathology assays to determine phenotypic diversity. New diagnostic tools will be developed.
