Research Project: Crop Yield Forecasting using Crop Models and Remote Sensing

Location: Plant Physiology and Genetics Research

Project Number: 2020-21600-001-012-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2025
End Date: Jun 30, 2026

Objective:
Develop and improve a yield forecasting system using EPIC crop model and remote sensing.

Approach:
The Cooperator and ARS will collaborate in the research activities to develop and improve a crop yield forecasting modeling framework to produce monthly crop yield outlooks. EPIC crop model is spatially calibrated using satellite remote sensing data. Seasonal and sub-seasonal weather forecasts will be then integrated into calibrated model. This integrated modeling framework will be implemented to simulate yield distributions on monthly basis, which will be used to produce probabilistic yield forecasts.
