Location: Grassland Soil and Water Research Laboratory
Project Number: 3098-13610-009-106-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: May 1, 2025
End Date: May 30, 2026
Objective:
To refine 7 existing HUC8/HUC12 models from the National Agroecosystems Model. The models will be refined with local data and calibrated for flow and water quality. Much of this local data was collected in association with the USDA/NRCS/ARS Legacy Phosphorus Project. The model will be used to simulate the effectiveness of conservation practices adopted at the regional level. The SWAT+ model will also be updated to improve phosphorus cycling in soils, streams and lakes. By including these Legacy P related components into SWAT+ we should be able to provide better support for the Conservation Effects Assessment Project and related modeling efforts.
Approach:
Each of the 7 models will be improved using available local data. Models will be calibrated to local observed streamflow and loads where possible. The local data will be assembled in cooperation with researchers at Morehead State and University of Minnesota. SWAT+ model routines for phosphorus in soils and reservoir/stream sediments will be improved in collaboration with ARS. Scenarios will be developed for each model based on local research efforts to evaluate the regional impact of potential conservation plans. These new improved routines will enhance SWAT+ prediction capabilities in areas with elevated Legacy P and will provide new scenario capabilities.
