Research Project: Digital Imaging of Specimen Information for US National Fungus Collections

Location: Mycology and Nematology Genetic Diversity and Biology Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-327-011-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: May 21, 2025
End Date: Nov 30, 2026

Objective:
Overall Goal: The objective of this agreement is to provide digital images of specimen labels housed in the US National Fungus Collections. This will negate the need to physically handle and loan specimens in cases where only information is needed and not the actual specimen. This will make valuable information annotated on the labels by previous researchers available to the Cooperator and general public. Objective 1: Image 300,000 specimen labels; Objective 2: Provide map of current usage of space in the US National Fungus Collections; Objective 3: Upload image to website for use by stakeholders and public.

Approach:
Work proposed for this interagency agreement will accomplished by a contractor familiar with the protocols for handling specimens and high quality digital imaging For Objective 1, Contractor will evaluate current state of the specimens remaining to be imaged and ARS PI will determine priority of specimens to be imaged. For Objective 2, Contractor will determine approximate numbers of specimens remaining to be imaged and an evaluation of current usage of cabinet space. For Objective 3, ARS PI and contractor will work together to determine how to upload images to ensure compatibility with existing systems.
