To convene an international, web-based conference to discuss the taxonomy of Phytophthora pathogens.

Workshop description: The genus Phytophthora is a an ancient, historic, biologically and structurally cohesive and evolutionarily successful generic concept. It comprises more than 200 species divided over 12 clades and shows paraphyly with two downy mildew clades. This two-day, web-based APS workshop is convened to assess the scientific support for retaining the name Phytophthora for all major clades of the genus, as recommended in a recent review ( The workshop will explore the evolutionary, biological, taxonomic, regulatory, social and economic ramifications involved with potential outcomes. Panel discussions will develop a community consensus on Phytophthora taxonomy.
