Objective:
The overall objective of the proposed research is to improve predictive models for hop downy mildew and cucurbit downy mildew. The specific objectives are to: (1) evaluate and validate probabilistic infection models for cucurbit downy mildew; (2) develop process-based models to estimate the duration and level of disease control from fungicides; and (3) extend the results to stakeholders.
Approach:
USDA researchers will establish experiments to measure the impact of fungicide timing and product on pre- and post-infection suppression of hop downy mildew relative to plant growth and weathering. Mechanistic models will be created that estimate percent disease control of selected fungicides based on timing of infection, dilution due to host growth, and weathering due to rainfall.
Results will be extended to industry through various forms of media to accelerate transfer of knowledge and best management practices.
