Research Project: Characterization of Xanthomonas Species Isolated from Non-Native and Native Cruciferous Weeds

Location: Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research

Project Number: 8044-22000-047-002-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2021

Objective:
Sequence the genomes of diverse Xanthomonas campestris strains isolated from non-native and native cruciferous weeds and perform comparative genomics and phylogenetics, in order to elucidate microbial evolution, gene transfers, and pathogen emergence.

Approach:
Approximately 40 Xanthomonas campestris strains will be sent to the Cooperator (MTRA #66424) for sample preparation and sequencing. Eight additional Xanthomonas campestris strains from weeds and crops will be included. Comparative genomics will be used to characterize known virulence and pathogenicity-related genes and used to infer horizontal gene transfer events and pathogen emergence.
