Research Project: VacciniumCAP: Leveraging Genetic and Genomic Resources to Enable Development of Blueberry and Cranberry Cultivars with Improved Fruit Quality

Location: National Clonal Germplasm Repository

Project Number: 2072-21000-059-002-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2019
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
1- Establish genomic resources to enable effective association mapping studies in blueberry and cranberry; 2- Deliver molecular resources to improve blueberry and cranberry fruit quality traits; 3- Engage U.S. blueberry and cranberry breeders and stakeholder groups to transfer these new genomic tools

Approach:
A high throughput genotyping platform will be developed for blueberry and cranberry that can enable genome wide association studies and will be used to genotype all the blueberry (Northern and Southern highbush) and cranberry individuals included in the proposal. DNA tests will be developed for loci responsible for traits of economic importance in blueberry and cranberry will be used to validate these markers. Genotypic data for blueberry and cranberry will be shared with co-PIs to conduct genome wide association studies.
