Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit
Project Number: 2072-21000-056-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 1, 2023
End Date: Aug 31, 2026
Objective:
The objective of this project is to refine and implement crop models and related simulations to assess the ecological costs, benefits, and impacts of hemp production. Assimilation of remote sensing, simulations, and empirical data will advance our predictive understanding of hemp as part of cropping systems in the pacific northwest.
Approach:
1. Analyze remotely sensed data to assess the current and potential growing environments for hemp as one crop option in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.
2. Implement crop modeling of hemp and its impacts on energy, water, and nutrient balances.
3. Conduct preliminary simulations to assess model formulations, likely at the scale of individual fields, to benchmark the modeling approach.
4. Simulate hemp as part of crop rotations at the field-to-region scale, and begin assessment of crop suitability for hemp in the modeled region.
