Research Project: Optimization and Expansion of Aflatoxin Biocontrol with Non-Aflatoxigenic Strains of Aspergillus flavus

Location: Pest Management and Biocontrol Research

Project Number: 2020-42000-023-026-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 1, 2023
End Date: Mar 31, 2028

Objective:
Continue development and optimization of aflatoxin biocontrol with non-aflatoxigenic strains of Aspergillus flavus in support of efforts by the tree nut, cotton, and corn industries to reduce crop aflatoxin contamination.

Approach:
Field and laboratory studies will be conducted to improve/optimize manufacturing and utilization of non-aflatoxigenic-strain based biocontrol products for mitigation of aflatoxin contamination in tree nuts, cotton, and corn. Activities will include development of new biocontrol active ingredients and/or formulations, assistance with registration of new biocontrol active ingredients/formulations, and identification of improved agronomic practices for maximizing the efficacy and reducing the cost of aflatoxin biocontrol product applications.
