Research Project: Cotton Co-products Processing to Increase Value and Improve Sustainability

Location: Cotton Production and Processing Research

Project Number: 3096-21410-009-017-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2023
End Date: Dec 31, 2023

Objective:
The global objective of the proposed research is to transfer the cottonseed mechanical delinter and preconditioning system to commercial facilities where the technology can be fully evaluated and utilized. In addition to transferring the cottonseed processing equipment to industry, efforts will be undertaken to revitalize the cotton byproduct research projects incorporating.

Approach:
The current 8-ft mechanical cottonseed delinter will be moved from the Lubbock, TX gin lab and installed at Mesa Farmers Coop in NM, Alberto Panda manager, for the 2023-24 ginning season. The mechanical cottonseed delinter will primarily process Pima cotton from select growers of Mesa Farmers Coop and data will be collected as to throughput and efficacy. The cottonseed preconditioning system that was initially evaluated at Brownfield Seed and Delinting and they have expressed interest in reevaluating the system once the system is modified with new drives (AC motors versus hydraulic motors), variable speed drives, and installing brush trough modification screws to allow adjustment of the clearances between the conveying augers and the wire brush trough. Once modifications have been made to the preconditioning system, it will be installed and evaluated at Brownfield Seed and Delinting.
