Research Project: Improving Plant Health in Nursery Production Through Genomic Approaches

Location: Horticultural Crops Disease and Pest Management Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-22000-045-028-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Oct 31, 2024

Objective:
Characterization of plant pathogen diversity and communities in commercial nursery production systems.

Approach:
This project will identify genetic diversity of Phytophthora pathogens including P. ramorum and other important Phytophthora species. Briefly, we will use population genomic approaches to profile genetic diversity in populations of select Phytophthora species. Variation among isolates within species will be assessed using genotyping methods including genotyping by sequencing (GBS) as well as plant pathology assays to determine phenotypic diversity. Metabarcoding approaches will be used to determine community diversity in Phytophthora species in nurseries and other environments.
