Research Project: Substrate-borne Vibrational Signals in Intraspecific Communication of the Blue-Green Sharpshooter

Location: Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics Research

Project Number: 2034-22000-014-015-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2022
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
1) Determine efficacy of natural tremulatory signals in disrupting mating of the blue-green sharpshooter (BGSS); 2) Assess BGSS male attractiveness to playback of female vibrational signals; 3) Develop methods for transmission of BGSS disruptive signals to crops and ground vegetation.

Approach:
We will record and characterize blue-green sharpsooter(BGSS) communication signals by video and laser vibrometry and develop bioassays to evaluate BGSS response to playback of candidate disruptive signals.
