Research Project: Evaluation of Strawberry Germplasm for Resistance to the Northern Root-Knot Nematode (Meloidogyne hapla)

Location: Mycology and Nematology Genetic Diversity and Biology Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-322-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2022
End Date: Sep 30, 2024

Objective:
Cooperator to perform greenhouse experiment testing strawberry resistance to the northern root-knot nematode in plants from Michigan State University strawberry breeding program. Top performing strawberry plants from experiment to be included in subsequent experiments conducted by ARS PI in Beltsville, MD. This information will allow identification of sources of resistance for strawberries to northern root-knot nematode.

Approach:
Strawberry plants will be grown in pots in a greenhouse by cooperator. Plants will be inoculated with eggs of the northern root-knot nematode. Twelve weeks after inoculation, plants will be evaluated for nematode resistance. Data will be analyzed for statistical differences in host susceptibility to the northern root-knot nematode.
