Location: Plant Stress and Germplasm Development Research
Project Number: 3096-21000-024-006-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Apr 1, 2022
End Date: Feb 28, 2027
Objective:
Stack environment-specific physiological traits in sorghum to optimize source-sink relationships for transformational increase in yield and grain quality under water-limited and relatively favorable conditions and (ii) Effective trait combinations assembled in industry preferred backgrounds for rapid commercialization.
Approach:
The proposed multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional project aims to address the core challenge of enhancing sorghum productivity and grain quality under water-limited and favorable environments. The goal of targeted trait-based ideotype breeding closely integrated with crop-climate modelling provides a new opportunity to enhance and sustain climatic yield potential of sorghum under current and future changing climate. The project aims to explore, and stack key source-sink related traits in advanced breeding lines and eventually in industry preferred backgrounds.
