Research Project: Development of Pheromone Based Detection Tool for the Cotton Seed Bug and Activity Evaluation

Location: Invasive Insect Biocontrol & Behavior Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-315-017-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Nov 15, 2021
End Date: Dec 1, 2023

Objective:
The primary goal of this project is to develop pheromone-based detection tool for the cotton seed bug (Oxycarenus hyalinipennis), evaluate the activity of pheromone formulations in the fields, commercialize the pheromone lure, and provide it to growers for cotton seed bug infestation detection and population monitoring in IPM program.

Approach:
Volatiles will be collected from male and female bugs and sex specific compounds will be identified. GC-MS is the major instrument for the compound identification. Pheromone candidate compounds will be synthesized, formulated, and tested in the cotton field for the activity.
