Research Project: Novel Partnerships for an Early-career Pipeline to Enhance the Biodefense Veterinary Workforce

Location: Research Programs

Project Number: 3022-32000-018-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2026

Objective:
The objective of this initiative is to increase the pipeline of diverse individuals seeking DVM, PhD degrees to work in agricultural biodefense research with a focus in foreign, zoonotic and/or emerging or reemerging livestock diseases. The ARS has great need of such qualified individuals at NBAF and other animal health laboratories in order to enhance U.S. preparedness. Early exposure and experiential learning in these fields/careers and to individuals working in this space will enable students to gain valuable research and educational experiences as well as develop relationships to successfully complete DVM, Ph.D. degrees.

Approach:
The ARS will work directly with Science Bound to develop, over the period of 5 years, training, experiential learning opportunities, and mentorship experiences with ARS animal health research and researchers to raise awareness of career paths and roles that veterinarians play within biodefense. Funding for the program will go directly to Science Bound.
