Objective:
Trace the formation of inorganic residues throughout tree nut production and marketing channels.

Approach:
Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Dried Fruit and Nut Association of California (DFA), Johns Hopkins University (JHU), California industry and foreign counterparts to address inorganic residues on dried fruit and tree nut exports to the European Union. Elements of this USDA-Foreign Agricultural Service Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops activity will be conducted in phases and this work represents phase 1, year 1: the development of methods for inorganic residue analysis with the JHU cooperator focused on capillary electrophoresis and hydrolytic processes.
