Research Project: Beyond Micronutrients – Discovering Natural Compounds in Potato and their Health Benefits

Location: Temperate Tree Fruit and Vegetable Research

Project Number: 2092-21220-003-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 30, 2023

Objective:
Objective 1. Build a comprehensive catalog of the natural products (NPs) of potato by mining the scientific literature and available databases.

Approach:
Methods for Objective 1 are informed by recent work of the ARS PI cataloging 1600+ natural products (NPs) in watermelon, which supports directed research on plant breeding and the health benefits of this fruit. Scientific expertise in potato research, particularly physiology, metabolomics and farming practices, will oversee the choice of literature and data to parse. Scientific literature and databases containing potato NP data will be parsed and detailed information for each NP identified in the literature or databases will be compiled into a single, exportable dataset. This information will be organized with regard to human nutrition. Data fields will include common and technical chemical names, identification numbers in popular chemical repositories, citation, and level reported in tubers. Also included will be pertinent data to link with various resources in chemistry, nutrition, and plant sciences, and to conduct cheminformatics and structural comparison analyses. The outcome of this work will be a comprehensive and exportable dataset of the NPs known to be present in potato. After quality checks of the data, the identified NPs will be appended to the potato NP catalog from Objective 1 with all the same data fields.
