Research Project: Utah Rare Plant Studies and Endangered Species Act Recovery Actions: Mojave Poppy Bee assessment in Washington County, Utah

Location: Pollinating Insect-Biology, Management, Systematics Research

Project Number: 2080-21000-019-006-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: May 26, 2020
End Date: Sep 30, 2021

Objective:
The objective of this project is Conduct systematic surveys for the Mojave Poppy Bee (Perdita meconis) on the Dwarf Bear Poppy (Arctomecon humilis) populations with emphasis on Arctomecon populations not studied in previous assessments of pollinators (e.g. expanded Beehive Dome) and nearby Argemone.

Approach:
Populations of bearpaw poppies (Arctomecon) and prickly poppies (Argemone) identified by BLM will be sampled for pollinators with emphasis on determining the presence of the Mojave poppy bee (Perdita meconis). Individual sites will be sampled every two weeks throughout the bloom. Presence will be documented by images and collection. Specimens will be collected as vouchers and for population studies. The identity of each specimen along with its sex will be entered into a relational database.
