Research Project: Cotton Coproducts Processing to Increase Value and Improve Sustainability

Location: Cotton Production and Processing Research

Project Number: 3096-21410-009-004-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2020
End Date: Dec 31, 2020

Objective:
To develop and/or evaluate value-added processes that will enhance the utilization and economic value of cottonseed and cotton byproducts to improve cotton's sustainability and contribute to grower profitability.

Approach:
The equipment an machinery at the Cotton Production and Processing Research Unit (CPPRU) will be utilized to build parts/components for a commercial prototype of a mechanical cottonseed delinting/preconditioning system. Also, the personnel and equipment will be used to conduct testing of the equipment at the commercial facility where the unit will be installed. In addition to cottonseed processing, various processes/techniques will be accessed to promote cotton-based erosion control materials with a commercial entity interested in developing and using cotton hydromulch. All testing will involve using CPPRU equipment and personnel for conducting the test, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting findings. The facility will produce test quantities of product for research, as directed by Cotton Inc, in the areas of food, feed, oil field, erosion control or fuel. These products will be evaluated in conjunction with other researchers who will assess the end use effects of these products. In addition to utilizing the facility for research, assistance will be provided to individuals and/or companies looking to implement innovations. Facilitating and coordinating the scale-up and commercialization of cotton-based products and the brush delinter will be a primary focus of this project. Anticipated Accomplishments: Develop and/or refine processing techniques that will either produce value-added products or reduce the cost of production. Results from this research will be presented and/or published in various Conferences or and Journal publications.
