Research Project: Surveys for Mojave Poppy Bee (Perdita meconis)

Location: Pollinating Insect-Biology, Management, Systematics Research

Project Number: 2080-21000-019-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 6, 2020
End Date: Jun 30, 2024

Objective:
Conduct surveys for the Mojave poppy bee including project development, sampling design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting. 1. Survey all populations of Arctomecon californica and A. merriami for Perdita meconis across the flowering season. 2. Survey associated prickly poppy populations. 3. Analyze and map presence of Perdita meconis. 4. Report findings (technical reports, presentations, and journal publications).

Approach:
Populations of bearpaw poppies (Arctomecon) and associated prickly poppies (Argemone) identified by Bureau of Land Management will be sampled for pollinators with emphasis on determining the presence of the Mojave poppy bee (Perdita meconis). Individual sites will be sampled every 10 days throughout bloom. Specimens will be collected, pinned or photographed, assigned unique matrix project numbers. Specimens will be identified to species and sex and the data entered into a specimen level relational database. Presence/absence of Perdita meconis will be mapped.
