Location: Pollinating Insect-Biology, Management, Systematics Research
Project Number: 2080-21000-019-028-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: Sep 25, 2019
End Date: Sep 24, 2024
Objective:
Conduct surveys for the Mojave poppy bee. The ARS will provide research, project development, sampling design, data collection, and data analysis expertise. Tasks may include but are not limited to: 1. Identification of key areas, identification of key research questions, sampling design and research experiment development, sampling method recommendations. 2. Implementation of experimental equipment and plots, and data collection. 3. Data analysis, report writing, and dissemination of findings (such as technical reports and journal publications).
Approach:
Populations of bearpaw poppies (Arctomecon) and prickly poppies (Argemone) identified by Bureau of Land Management will be sampled for pollinators with emphasis on determining the presence of the Mojave poppy bee (Perdita meconis). Individual sites will be sampled every 10 days throughout bloom. Specimens will be collected, pinned, assigned unique matrix project numbers. Specimens will be identified to species and sex and the data entered into a specimen level relational database. Presence/absence of Perdita meconis will be mapped.
