Dr. Jim Throne received a B.S. in Biology from Southeastern Massachusetts University in 1976, an M.S. in Entomology from Washington State University in 1978, and a Ph.D. in Entomology from Cornell University in 1983. He was a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Entomology at North Carolina State University from 1983 to 1985. He then joined USDA-ARS as a Research Entomologist at the Stored-Product Insects Research and Development Laboratory in Savannah, Georgia, where he conducted research on the ecology and management of stored-product insects from 1985 to 1994. He was transferred to the USDA-ARS Center for Grain and Animal Health Research in Manhattan, Kansas, in 1994, where he continued his research on stored-product insects. He served as Research Leader of the Stored Product Insect Research Unit from 1997 to 2013. In 2013, he was selected as Director of the San Joaquin Valley Agricultural Sciences Center in Parlier, California.
