Technical Abstract: Arkansas' aquaculture production for 1997 showed an increase in both acreage and farm gate value since 1996. Fish farming acreage increased to 74,241 acres (an increase of 2,514 acres since 1996) with a farm gate value of fish at $166.8 million, an increase of $31.4 million since 1996. Most all of the acreage increase was devoted to catfish production. At least 13 different fish species are being cultured. Most of the production is located in the southeast, east central, and northeast sections of the state. Arkansas leads all states in the production of bait fish, Chinese carps, and hybrid striped bass and is the second leading state in the production of catfish.
