Technical Abstract: Despite the success of regional bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV) eradication programs, infections with this diverse group of viruses remain a source of economic loss for producers worldwide. There is a wide range of variation among BVDV results in differences in genotype (BVDV1 and BVDV2), biotype (cytopathic and noncytopathic), virulence (avirulent to highly virulent), and types of infections (acute and persistent). The two genotypes of BVDV, BVDV1 and BVDV, are now recognized as two distinct species. While commonly associated with cattle, BVDV infect a wide range of domestic and wild ruminants. Clinical presentation varies depending on strain of virus, species of host, immune status of host, reproductive status of host, age of host, and concurrent infections with other pathogens. Recent advances in BVDV research and diagnostics have led to the development of regional eradication/control programs. The most efficacious of these are built around a three-pronged attack focusing on biosecurity, surveillance and control.
