Composition of Gossypol Enantiomers in Seeds of Uzbek Industrial Cotton Species. Journal of Uzbek Academy of Sciences. (3):69-72. Interpretive Summary: The amount of chiral and total gossypol was determined in 28 Uzbek cotton varieties. The survey provides a baseline survey into the amounts of this anti-nutritive secondary metabolite cotton in Uzbek cotton varieties. The information will be of interest to researchers studying the formation and presence of gossypol in cotton plants and will help feed formulators in Uzbekistan better manage cottonseed and cottonseed meal use. Technical Abstract: The total gossypol percentage and the composition of gossypol enantiomers was determined in seeds of 26 varieties of Gossypium hirsutum cotton and two varieties of G. barbadense cotton that are cultivated in Uzbekistan by reverse-phase HPLC. The percentage of the more highly toxic (-)-gossypol form in the G. barbadense seeds averaged 51.25±0.50%. Depending on the amounts of (-)-gossypol, the seeds of Upland cotton varieties were divided into high (44.25±0.50%) and low (31.75±0.50%) (-)-gossypol groups. |
