Interpretive Summary: Flower flies are found throughout New Zealand. They breed in a wide range of habitats, some aiding in nutrient recycling, others are predators of various pests, and all are pollinators as adults. A few are invasive, attacking flower bulbs and root-crops. Due to their diverse life cycles, the group is a good indicator of the health of the environment. This paper documents the basic classification being used, providing an identification key to taxonomic groups of these flies, as well as describes one new genus and species previously unknown to science. This information will be useful to scientists studying flies, and to action agency personnel charged with identifying flies.

Technical Abstract: A key to the New Zealand flower fly genera is presented; one new genus (Anu Thompson, type una Thompson) and one new species (Anu una Thompson)) are described. A checklist of the flower flies of New Zealand is also included.
