Interpretive Summary: Ethylene regulation of a number of regulatory factors during cool-temperature induced sepal morphogenesis was revealed. Tomato sepals, when cultured in vitro between 16 and 22 degrees C, appear to change their genetic program to that of ripening fruit. We used 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), to block ethylene induced gene expression by interrupting the ethylene signal transduction pathway that occurs in ripening tomato fruits and possibly in ripening sepals. Regulatory factors previously shown to be up-regulated during cool-temperature induced sepal morphogenesis were not induced in 1-MCP treated sepals indicating ethylene regulation of these transcripts.
