Technical Abstract: The USDA/ARS Hard Red Spring and Durum Wheat Quality Laboratory evaluated 16 cultivars of hard red spring (HRS) wheat from the 2001 crop for kernel and milling properties, and subsequently shipped flour (and/or wheat) to overseas cooperators through arrangements made by US Wheat Associates (USW) foreign offices (FOs). Wheat cultivars were collected on an export region basis. Nine of the cultivars were selected from Western spring wheat growing regions representative of the PNW export market, and seven were selected from Eastern spring wheat growing regions representative of the Gulf export market. Two composites (ND 724 and ND 729) were experimental lines that were included in the 2001 samples submitted to the Wheat Quality Council for testing. Subsamples of each cultivar were obtained from several environments (regions) and were visually evaluated for the presence of diseased and damaged kernels, insects, and odor. Subsamples that passed visual inspection criteria were blended, which represented a composite of a cultivar. Composite samples were officially graded by the USDA/FGIS and milled in the USDA/ARS Miag Pilot mill. Overseas cooperators analyzed flour/wheat samples for dough processing, end use performance, and overall acceptability, and the data were compiled and distributed to US producers, breeders, quality laboratories, the grain trade, and participating overseas cooperators. The intent of the Overseas Varietal Analysis Program was to provide feedback from overseas cooperators on wheat/flour quality traits on a cultivar specific basis as a means to enhance international marketing.
