Technical Abstract: Bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV) is the term used to refer to a group of related viruses that cause major economic losses for U.S. cattle producers. This article is one in a series of four articles written for use by veterinarians and owners and managers of dairy operations. These articles discuss basic BVDV biology and management practicies that prevent the spread of BVDV. Topics also include methods of detection, transmission of BVDV between domestic cattle and wild ruminants, and vaccines against BVDV that are now available.
