Title: MEASUREMENTS OF GW, SW, AND ET FLUXES IN A SEMI-ARID RIPARIAN SYSTEM AS PART OF THE SALSA PROGRAM

Technical Abstract: A primary objective of the SALSA (Semi-Arid Land-Surface-Atmosphere) Program is to measure and model the GW, SW and ET, or atmospheric interactions of semi-arid riparian systems. In many of these systems, the GW, SW, and ET fluxes are of comparable magnitude so each must be measured and modeled with commensurate accuracy. A multidisciplinary experimental campaign to measure these fluxes on a riparian section of the San Pedro River in southeastern Arizona during the 1997 growing season will be described. The campaign will include simultaneous measurements of streamflow, regional and alluvial groundwater levels across two well transects, streambed seepage, vadose zone soil moisture, ET by micrometeorology and sap flow techniques, and isotopes to define water sources for the riparian forest. In addition, ground, aircraft and satellite measurements will be made in an attempt to remotely derive riparian ET to define this critical boundary condition for regional groundwater modeling.
