Title: APPLICATIONS OF HPAE-PAD IN THE SUGAR INDUSTRY

Interpretive Summary: Millions of dollars are lost each year in the sugar industry due to chemical losses of sucrose in sugar manufacture and refining. Such losses are difficult to measure, but HPAE-PAD, a very sensitive chromatography technique, was shown to accurately and repeatedly measure the amounts of sucrose, glucose and fructose in industrial samples from sugar factories and refineries. Solutions to common problems associated with this technique, are described in detail, in order to be of great help to sugar industry personnel. A special HPAE-PAD method was developed, to measure oligosaccharides, which are large sugar molecules that are commonly present in industrial samples in small amounts. This method will be very useful to sugar industry technicians and researchers, to identify problems in industry processing conditions and process raw materials.

Technical Abstract: This article describes the application of HPAE-PAD technology for the accurate determination of sucrose, glucose and fructose in various industrial sugar samples, including juices and liquors. Under optimized conditions, multiple samples can be measured repeatedly and accurately. Troubleshooting of problems that sometimes occur is discussed. The analysis of oligosaccharides in sugar industry samples, using HPAE-PAD with a strong NaOH/NaOAc eluent gradient is also comprehensively discussed.
