Technical Abstract: Little is known about the impact of the soil environment on colonization of roots by bacterial biocontrol agents despite the assumed importance of root colonization to biocontrol consistency and efficacy. This book chapter is an overview of 1) the genetic approaches available, and sometimes used, to determine the role root colonization has in specific biocontrol interactions and 2) the genetic approaches being used to identify specific genes and traits necessary for root colonization by bacterial biocontrol agents. In addition, genetic approaches for the modulation of growth of bacterial biocontrol agents in the soil around roots is also discussed
