Registration of ‘NE06545’ (husker genetics brand freeman) hard red winter wheat. Journal of Plant Registrations. 8:279-284. DOI: 10.3198/jpr2014.02.0009crc. Interpretive Summary: Nebraska is climatically and geographically diverse. Due to year to year and place to place rainfall and temperature variations, wheat cultivars with broad adaptation are preferred by wheat producers as a way to provide consistently higher grain yields. Hence broad adaptation is a goal of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS cooperative wheat improvement team. Other major goals of the Nebraska Wheat Improvement team include ability to survive the NE winter, resistance to stem rust, and make an acceptable loaf of bread. ‘NE06545’ (PI 667038) hard red winter wheat was tested under experimental line designation NE06545 and was developed and released in January, 2013 cooperatively by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS for its broad adaptation. NE06545 will be marketed and sold as Husker Genetics Brand ‘Freeman’. The name Freeman was chosen to honor the 150th Anniversary of the passage of the Homestead Act (1862) and of Daniel Freeman who is believed to be the first homesteader. His homestead was near Beatrice, NE. As the line was formally released in 2013, the name can also honor the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation (1863). NE06545 was released primarily for its superior performance under rainfed conditions throughout Nebraska. Technical Abstract: Providing more productive wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars with broad adaptation in their target regions to wheat producers is a major goal of wheat breeding programs. 'NE06545' ( PI 667038) hard red winter wheat was developed cooperatively by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS and released in 2013 by the developing institutions. NE06545 was released primarily for its superior performance under rainfed conditions in Nebraska and adjacent areas of the Great Plains. NE06545 was selected from the cross KS92-946-B-15-1/’Alliance’ where the pedigree of KS92-946-B-15-1 is ABI86*3414/’Jagger’/’Karl 92’. That cross was made in 2000. NE06545 was selected using a modified bulk breeding method as an F3:4 line (F3-derived line in the F4 generation) in 2004, and in 2006 was assigned experimental line number NE06545. It survives the winter, has acceptable disease reactions to many of the common diseases in its target area, and has acceptable end-use quality for bread making. NE06545 will be marketed and sold as Husker Genetics Brand ‘Freeman’. |
