Technical Abstract: Loop-mediated isothermal amplification of DNA (LAMP) can amplify a target DNA sequence at a constant temperature in about 1 hour. LAMP technology has great potential for agricultural applications because of the need for rapid and inexpensive diagnoses. Assays based on LAMP technology are well suited to the discrimination of economically important insects, particularly members of cryptic species complexes, which cannot be distinguished morphologically. We report ongoing work to develop a LAMP system that can discriminate among the invasive Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) biotypes B and Q. The ultimate goal of the project is a system that can be implemented in the field for on-site detection.
