Technical Abstract: A number of gene mutation in various arthropods have been found to be associated with pesticide resistance. Some of these mutations have been found in the two cattle pests, Rhipicephalus microplus and Haematobia irritans. Sodium channel gene mutations have been associated with pyrethroid resistance in both species, while a mutation in acetylcholinesterase has been associated with organophosphate resistance in H. irritans. Of specific relevance to Brazil, populations of H. irritans with the pyrethroid resistance-associated sodium channel mutation have been found in many regions of the country but to date Brazilian R. microplus populations seem to be free of the target site resistance sodium channel mutation found in Mexico and the US.
