Phytosanitary measures to prevent the introduction of invasive species. In: Nentwig, W., editor. Ecological Studies: Biological Invasions. New York, NY:Springer-Verlag. p. 367-384. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: This chapter discusses phytosanitary measures from the standpoint of invasive species. It lists many problems facing regulators, such as global climate changes, increased quantity and variety of trade, environmental degradation, and smuggling. Phytosanitary measures are divided into those requiring a treatment and those avoiding a treatment. The latter include non-host status and the systems approach. Criteria for commercially viable treatments are discussed, and commercially used and experimental treatments examined. The chapter ends with future challenges facing regulatory agriculture. |
