Technical Abstract:
Turkey Astrovirus (TAstV) has been found in turkeys experiencing poult enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS), a disease that has caused great economic loss to the poultry industry in the United States (1, 2, 10). Astroviruses are small, non-enveloped, positive sense, ssRNA viruses that are associated with enteric disease in humans and numerous mammalian and avian species (8). Epidemiologic studies using electron microscopic examination of turkey feces have demonstrated the wide distribution of TAstV’s, the virus being isolated from 78% of turkey flocks with enteritis.
